OUR HISTORY
In 1965 the initial 9-hole public course layout designed by Mr A. Toogood and constructed by Mr D. R. Hazell (later Hazell Bros.) was opened. Ladies met to form a group to play competitive golf on the course in 1966. A Committee was formed to control their activities. In September 1967 a meeting was arranged to form a similar Committee for men.
At the April 1968 meeting of the Committee it was decided to approach the Southern Tasmanian Golf Union (STGU) to discuss affiliation, and on 21 March 1969 the Club was granted affiliation with the STGU. Mr J. V. Michael was appointed delegate to the Union.
The Club was named North West Bay Country Golf Club. An Official Opening Ceremony was held on 22 June 1969 with guests from other Clubs and the STGU attending.
From 1969 to 1970 a second 9 holes were developed and became operational at about the time that affiliation was granted to the Club.
In 1976 the State Housing Department acquired land that included the Golf Course which required the Club to negotiate a new lease.
Three new holes were opened in 1979, (holes 13, 14 and 18) with the old holes 16-18 towards the CHannel Hwy / Howden Rd junction being abandoned. This constituted the first major change to the layout since the club had gained control of the course. In this year, the Club also won Division 1 of Country Pennant for the first time.
During 1980 the Club concluded negotiations to purchase the golf course from the Housing Department. A Special General Meeting in August 1980 resolved that the Club complete the purchase for a cost of $95,000.
Club member Brett Johns won the Tasmanian Amateur Championship in 1981.
At the 1983 Annual General Meeting the Committee was directed to commence a long-term development plan for the course. Also, during this year Brett Johns won his second Tasmanian Amateur Championship.
1985 - Brett Johns won the Tasmanian Amateur Championship for the third time.
1987 - Brett Johns won the Tasmanian Amateur Championship for the fourth time.
At a Special General Meeting on 12 September 1988, a course development plan created by Mr Peter Toogood and incorporating a watering system was adopted and put into operation with a minimum of delay. On 16 December 1989, the first 9 holes of this revamped course layout were opened. The word "Country" was removed from the Club name.
On 10 November 1990, the Governor of Tasmania, His Excellency General Sir Phillip Bennett AC, KBE, DSO, officially opened the new course, which increased the overall course length from 5282 to 6108 m.
1990 - Brett Johns won the Tasmanian Amateur Championship for the fifth time.
